The Inspiring Journey of Shri Mithilesh Kumar Singh: From No Pond Ownership to a Crore-Plus Fisheries Enterprise

Shri Mithilesh Kumar Singh, a progressive fish farmer from Rohtas district of Bihar, exemplifies the transformative potential of scientific knowledge and institutional support in promoting rural entrepreneurship. From having no prior experience in fisheries and no ponds of his own, he has developed an 18-acre commercial aquaculture enterprise, generating an annual turnover of over ₹1 crore with a net profit margin of 20–25%. His remarkable journey demonstrates how technical training, systematic investment and the adoption of scientific practices can create sustainable livelihood opportunities and strengthen the rural economy.

Scientific Training: The Foundation of Entrepreneurial Success

Recognising the growing potential of inland fisheries as a viable business opportunity, Shri Singh participated in a seven-day training programme on Inland Fisheries Management organised by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, with sponsorship from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Bihar.

The programme provided him with practical knowledge and essential technical skills in pond preparation and management, water quality monitoring, fish species selection, stocking density, scientific feeding practices and fish health management. More importantly, the training equipped him with the confidence and technical understanding required to venture into commercial aquaculture.

From a Beginner to an 18-Acre Commercial Enterprise

Applying the knowledge acquired through the training, Shri Singh gradually established and expanded his fish farming activities through systematic investment, scientific management and sustained entrepreneurial efforts.

Today, his enterprise covers approximately 18 acres of pond culture area, including a recent expansion of two acres in 2026. His production system primarily comprises Indian Major Carps (IMC), including Rohu (Labeo rohita), Catla (Gibelion catla) and Mrigal (Cirrhinus  mrigala), along with Pangasius (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus). This diversified approach enables efficient utilisation of pond resources while catering to different market requirements.

The enterprise currently generates an annual turnover exceeding ₹1 crore, with a net profit margin of 20–25%, highlighting the economic viability and commercial potential of scientifically managed aquaculture.

Continuous Learning for Sustainable Growth

Recognising that technological advancement and continuous learning are essential for long-term success, Shri Singh returned to ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, in 2026 to participate in an advanced training programme. His continued association with the Institute reflects his commitment to upgrading technical skills, improving production efficiency and adopting improved aquaculture practices to address emerging challenges.

Recalling his experience, Shri Singh remarked:“Before coming to ICAR-CIFRI, I knew nothing about fish and fisheries. The scientific training not only enriched my knowledge but also gave me the confidence to build a sustainable commercial business step by step.”
