ICAR–Mahatma Gandhi Integrated Farming Research Institute, Motihari, Bihar, organized a soil health awareness and field assessment programme under Khet Bachao Abhiyan (KBA) – Rabi 2026 at Sangrampur Chaur, East Champaran, Bihar, today. The programme focused on soil health management, balanced fertilization, flood-induced crop damage assessment and climate-resilient farming practices in waterlogged rice-growing ecosystems.
The programme was organized under the overall guidance of Dr Raghavendra Singh, Director, ICAR–MGIFRI, who emphasized the importance of developing location-specific, climate-resilient farming strategies for flood-prone and waterlogged areas of Bihar. He highlighted the need for scientific soil health management, efficient nutrient utilization, crop diversification and sustainable agricultural practices to improve farm productivity and strengthen farmers' livelihoods.

The field programme involved field observations, soil sampling, and farmer interactions to assess soil health and crop management challenges under varying waterlogging conditions. Fields were classified into three categories: uplands with minimal waterlogging, intermediate Chaur fields with 3–5 days of waterlogging, and low-lying Chaur fields with 13–15 days of water stagnation.
The programme highlighted the effects of flooding on rice growth, crop recovery, and subsequent Rabi crop establishment, emphasizing timely crop planning, improved drainage, suitable crop selection, and climate-resilient practices. Technical guidance was also provided on soil testing, balanced fertilizer application, integrated nutrient management, and organic resource recycling to restore soil health and sustain crop productivity.
During the interactive session, farmers shared their experiences regarding water stagnation, rice crop damage, soil fertility deterioration and difficulties in cultivating low-lying fields. The scientific team provided practical guidance on soil health improvement, nutrient management, crop diversification and location-specific Rabi crop planning.

The programme strengthened soil health awareness, farmer–scientist interaction and climate-resilient agricultural planning in flood-prone Chaur ecosystems. The initiative reaffirmed ICAR–MGIFRI's commitment to promoting healthy soils, balanced fertilization, sustainable crop management and resilient farming systems under Khet Bachao Abhiyan – Rabi 2026, particularly for small and marginal farmers in the waterlogged regions of eastern India.
A total of 23 farmers participated and interacted with the scientific team regarding soil fertility constraints, seasonal flooding and sustainable crop management.
