Training Programme on “Raw Cashewnut processing and value-added products of cashew apple” at ICAR-DCR, Puttur

The ICAR-Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur conducted a 5-day Training Programme on “Raw Cashewnut processing and value-added products of cashew apple” from 6 to 10 February 2023 for the farmers and officials from the state of Meghalaya, sponsored by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency.

Dr J.  Dinakara Adiga, Director, ICAR-DCR, in his inaugural address spoke about the research as well as technology adoption gaps in the cashew sector. He also briefed about the recent achievements of the Institute. Dr Adiga deliberated on the prospects of including intercrops like ginger and black pepper under the cashew ecosystem. He also discussed practices which can nearly double the present productivity level of Meghalaya with respect to cashew.

Shri Saurabh Bose, Senior Manager, Megha-LAMP Project, Meghalaya briefed the activities of the Meghalaya Livelihoods Access to Market Project funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development and Govt. of Meghalaya, being implemented by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA).  He said they focus on improving family incomes and quality of life of the rural mass in Meghalaya through expanded and sustainable livelihood opportunities. He also highlighted the possibilities of establishing raw cashew nut processing units at Meghalaya for the farmers through different funding agencies.

Training Coordinator, Dr D. Balasubramanian said training has been designed to equip the participants with the latest technological developments in the raw Cashewnut processing and value addition of cashew apple.

Around 17 farmers and officials of Meghalaya have participated in the training programme.
