The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata in collaboration with the Ramkrishna Ashram Krishi Vigyan Kendra, District South 24-Parganas, West Bengal organized the one-day Awareness Programme on “Protection of Plant Varieties, Farmers’ Rights and other IPR Issues” at Nimpith Ashram, Sundarbans, West Bengal here today.


The Chief Guest, Swami Shri Sadanand Ji Maharaj, Secretary, Ramkrishna Ashram, Nimpith underlined the important role played by the agriculture technology in improving the livelihood of the people. He also commended the ICAR-CIFRI for its livelihood enhancement work carried out in the Sundarban Region.
The Guest of Honor, Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata highlighted the Gobindbhog Rice that has got the tag of Geographical Indicator. Delivering a Lecture on “Biodiversity Act and Conservation of Biodiversity”, Dr. Das regarded the Sundarbans Region as a hotspot of biodiversity that supports the livelihood of a large population.
Dr. Chandan Kumar Mondal, Head, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nimpith outlined the KVK’s role in helping the farmers to register their varieties.
Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. A.K. Das, In-charge (Extension and Training Cell), ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata briefed about the importance of the Awareness Programme.
More than 100 participants including 70 farmers from the different parts of Sundarbans; Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Scientists and Staff Members of RA KVK, Nimpith and AICRP on Sunflower, Nimpith participated in the programme.
