ICAR–KVK, North & Middle Andaman Conducts Field Day on Oyster Mushroom Cultivation

ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North & Middle Andaman organised a Field Day on Oyster Mushroom Cultivation at the KVK premises today with the objective of promoting scientific mushroom cultivation and sustainable crop residue management among farmers and farmwomen of the islands.

During the programme, a comprehensive session on scientific oyster mushroom cultivation covering substrate preparation, spawning, incubation, crop management, harvesting, hygiene maintenance, and marketing opportunities was delivered highlighting the nutritional and economic significance of oyster mushroom cultivation as a viable income-generating enterprise for rural households and women entrepreneurs in the island ecosystem.

The experts interacted with the participants on crop residue management and sustainable agricultural practices emphasising the effective utilisation of agricultural wastes and crop residues for the preparation of vermicompost and mushroom substrate, thereby encouraging eco-friendly recycling of farm waste and integrated farming systems suited to island conditions.

An awareness session on the balanced use of fertilisers was also organised during the event. Farmers’ queries related to mushroom cultivation, nutrient management, and crop production were addressed through interactive discussions.

The programme was conducted under the overall guidance of Dr Jai Sunder, Director (Act.), ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijayapuram.

Around 20 farmers and farmwomen actively participated in the programme and gained practical knowledge for adoption in their farming activities.
