Stakeholders’ Meet on “Sugarcane and Sugar Sector @2025” organized

The Stakeholders’ Meet on “Sugarcane and Sugar Sector @2025” was organized by the ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh here today.

  

Inaugurating the Meet, the Chief Guest, Shri Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Sugarcane and Sugar Development, Government of Uttar Pradesh highlighted the enhancement of the farmers’ income by 1.75 times during the period 2017-2022 due to the improved cane production technology of the Research Institutes, hard work of farmers and intervention in the management of Sugar Mills.

Shri S.C. Deshmukh, Director General, Vasantdada Sugar Institute, Pune, Maharashtra credited the Government policies for the transformation of the Sugarcane and Sugar Industry.

Dr. G. Hemaprabha, Director, ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore outlined the varieties of Sugarcane developed by the Institute that are prevalent in the various countries around the globe. The need of fine tuning the breeding strategies for higher biomass production, climate-resilience smart varieties through biotechnological approaches was stressed by her.

Dr. Sushil Solomon, Former Vice-Chancellor, C.S. Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh appreciated the coordinated efforts of all the stakeholders to translate the vision documents prepared by the ICAR-IISR, Lucknow into a reality.

Prof. Narendra Mohan, Director, NSI, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh attributed the transformation in the Indian Sugar Sector to the fixation of minimum selling prices of sugar and the differential pricing policy of ethanol.

Shri Sanjay Awasthi, President, Sugar Technologists’ Association of India highlighted the need of transformation into the green energy production with global competitiveness in terms of per unit cost.

Shri R.K. Gangwar, E.D., Mawana Sugar stated about the yield gains and monetary contributions of the Variety - Co 0238 especially, in the Subtropical Zone.

Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. A.D. Pathak, Director, ICAR-IISR, Lucknow underlined the initiation of the research work by the Institute in the frontier areas like Natural Farming, Artificial Intelligence, Nanotechnology and Biotechnology, etc.

The Meet was aimed at providing a common platform to the various Stakeholders like Scientists, Sugar Industry, Development Departments, Input Providers, Sugarcane Farmers and Self-Help Groups for deliberating on the current issues of concern for the sector and the way-forward to address the challenges in 2025 and beyond.

More than 300 Scientists, Researchers, Executives of Sugar Industry, Officers of Sugarcane Development Department Sugarcane Farmers and Members of NGOs, Farmers’ Producers’ Organizations and Self-Help Groups attended the Meet.
