ICAR Institutes celebrate World Environment Day - 2021

With an aim to prevent and restore the ecosystem, the 5^th June is celebrated as the “World Environment Day” every year.

The ICAR Institutes pan India celebrated the day with full zeal and fervor.

 

ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Pune & KVK, Jalna - 1, Maharashtra

The ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Pune and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jalna - I, Maharashtra jointly celebrated the World Environment Day - 2021 today.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Lakhan Singh, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Pune encouraged the self-motivated farmers of KVK, Jalna - 1 to come forward for “Ecosystem Restoration”. Highlighting the “Jalshakti Abhiyan”, Dr. Singh applauded the KVK’s efforts in watershed development.

  

Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. S.V. Sonune, Head, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jalna - I shared the experience of village watersheds developed and success harnessed in terms of resource conservation and attaining higher income per unit area.

A total of 179 farmers, rural youths, women and extension workers also virtually participated in the programme.

 

ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa

The Institute established the Nakshatra Garden to mark the celebrations of the World Environment Day today.

In his address, Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI, Goa urged to protect the ecosystems and natural assets by adopting the various measures like tree planting, cleaning river & water bodies, changing diet, etc.

  

Earlier, Dr. Monica Suresh Singh, SMS, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa delivered the welcome address.

The staff members of the Institute participated in the event.

 

ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai

The Chief Guest, Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director, ICAR-National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management, Baramati, Maharashtra delivered a Talk on “Economy or Environment? Solving the Eternal conflict” on the occasion.

He outlined about the development of Indian food production from a food deficient to self-sufficient and surplus status over 7 decades of Post-Independence. Dr. Pathak stressed that the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides not only cause soil-less productivity, but also eutrophication of water bodies.

Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA emphasized on the necessity of keeping environmental balancing between food production activities and sustainable use of natural resources.

More than 100 participants including researchers, academicians and students participated in the Webinar.

 

ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh

The Institute organized a Webinar on “Ecosystem Restoration for Sustainable Food Production and Human Health”.

The Chief Guest, Dr. S.K. Chaudhari, Deputy Director General (Natural Resource Management), ICAR emphasized on preventing and reducing entry of harmful substances in soil as a key to maintain soil health and soil ecosystem services.

  

Dr. A.K. Patra, Director, ICAR-IISS, Bhopal outlined about the land degradation and management of different fragile ecosystems for restoring the degraded ecosystem.

  

Dr. K.S. Rao, Professor & Head, Department of Botany, University of Delhi delivered a Talk on “Restoration of Ecology from Reference Ecosystems to Novel Ecosystems”.

Around 100 participants from the ICAR-IISS and other Institutions participated in the event.
