Empowering Kalahandi’s tribal farmers with improved fish and prawn farming technologies at ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar

ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar, organized a one-day workshop on “Improved Varieties of Carps and Freshwater Prawn for Sustainable Aquaculture Production” under the TSP/STC Scheme today at Finspire Hatchery, Kalahandi, Odisha.

The programme aimed to enhance awareness of genetically improved aquaculture species and scientific management practices for increasing productivity and farmers’ income.

ICAR-CIFA scientists delivered technical sessions on genetically improved carp varieties, improved freshwater prawn culture, and best management practices for broodstock and nursery management. Emphasis was placed on quality seed production, scientific culture practices and sustainable aquaculture technologies.

An interactive farmer–scientist session provided participants an opportunity to discuss seed availability, culture practices, disease management and market opportunities. The workshop strengthened linkages among farmers, hatchery operators, fisheries officials and researchers, encouraging wider adoption of improved aquaculture technologies in tribal areas.

The workshop brought together 150 tribal fish farmers and hatchery owners from all 13 blocks of Kalahandi district, including 50 women participants, along with 10 officials from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Odisha.
