As part of the ICAR-led ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ campaign promoting soil health and sustainable agriculture, ICAR-Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres, Barrackpore organized an awareness camp on “Green Manuring through Sunnhemp Crop” today. The programme was conducted in the presence of Mr. Panigrahi, CMD, Jute Corporation of India (JCI); Mr. Kalyan Mazumdar, GM, JCI; Dr. Gouranga Kar, Director, ICAR-CRIJAF; along with scientists, technical staff and farmers.

Addressing the participants, Dr Gouranga Kar highlighted the importance of green manuring in reducing excessive use of chemical fertilizers, improving soil fertility and enhancing crop productivity. He emphasized that balanced and scientific nutrient management practices are essential for sustaining long-term soil health and agricultural productivity.

Farmers from nearby villages actively participated in the programme and took part in the sowing of sunnhemp seeds for green manuring. The participants expressed keen interest in adopting green manuring practices as a sustainable approach for improving soil health, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and ensuring long-term farm productivity and food security.
The programme reinforced the significance of the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ in promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices and safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods through improved soil management.
