The Chief Guest, Dr Sunil Doley, Head of Division, ICAR-Mizoram Centre, Kolasib, encouraged the participants to adopt humane slaughter practices, stating that such measures would help safeguard consumer health, uphold legal standards, and set positive examples within the meat sector. He further assured continued technical support, training, and guidance from the scientific community for effective adoption of the technology.

In his opening remarks, Dr Girish Patil S., Director, ICAR-NRC on Mithun, highlighted that traditional slaughter practices followed in many areas often do not conform to humane slaughter protocols prescribed under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines. He emphasised that such practices may lead to avoidable animal suffering and concerns related to hygiene and meat quality.

To address these issues, scientifically approved humane slaughter techniques, including electrical stunning methods for pigs and poultry, were demonstrated during the programme. The technology ensures that animals are rendered unconscious before slaughter, thereby minimising pain and distress while also improving meat hygiene and consumer safety.

A virtual presentation highlighting the benefits and applications of humane slaughter technology for local butchers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders in the meat sector was also delivered during the programme.

Participants were provided with hands-on training on the proper use of electric stunning devices through live demonstrations, enabling them to gain practical exposure and confidence in handling the equipment. The butchers were encouraged to adopt the technology widely and promote hygienic and humane meat handling practices in local markets.

As part of the initiative, 28 beneficiaries received complete sets of electric stunning equipment to facilitate the adoption of humane slaughter practices and hygienic meat management at the grassroots level.

The programme was conducted in collaboration with the offices of the Chief Veterinary Officers of Dimapur and Chümoukedima under the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Government of Nagaland.
