The Graduate School and the Genetics Club of ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute organized a Teachers’ Day celebration today at the institute, commemorating the timeless contributions of teachers to education and society.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Ramesh Chand, Member, NITI Aayog, who warmly introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Chairman, Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board. The event was also graced by Dr. Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director, ICAR-IARI; Dr. C. Vishwanath, Joint Director (Research); Dr. Anupama Singh, Dean & Joint Director (Education); and Dr. R.N. Padaria, Joint Director (Extension), along with faculty, research scholars, students, staff, and alumni.
Presiding over the celebration, Dr. Chand lauded the teachers of ICAR-IARI, highlighting that the institute’s academic traditions and values have given new direction to agricultural education and research in India. Recalling his student days, he emphasized the enduring significance of the teacher–student relationship, noting that it builds the foundation of knowledge and innovation.

Delivering the Teachers’ Day lecture, Dr. Sanjay Kumar remarked that “once a teacher, always a teacher,” underscoring the timeless nature of the teaching profession. He described ICAR-IARI as “Bharat in action: epitome of agricultural wisdom,” acknowledging its pivotal role in shaping India’s agricultural development. Paying rich tributes to Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, he reiterated the philosophy that India’s food security must rest on self-reliance and indigenous resources.
Dr. Kumar urged young researchers to pursue seemingly impossible challenges, noting that many great discoveries emerge from such attempts. He also highlighted agricultural innovations such as the successful transplanting of asafoetida in India, the growing significance of the spice, the tulip garden initiative in Jammu & Kashmir as a model of farmer self-reliance, and dry toilets for cold deserts as an example of science serving society.
Urging students and scientists to document their findings in a timely manner, Dr. Kumar emphasized staying connected with communities and addressing their needs with patience, resilience, and commitment. “Patience pays, and tangible success always takes time,” he reminded the gathering.
Welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. Srinivasa Rao congratulated the institute community for ICAR-IARI’s first rank in NIRF-2025 among Agriculture and Allied Universities, and second rank nationally among institutions contributing to Sustainable Development Goals.
