ICAR-CCARI, Goa Organises Exposure Visit-cum-Input Distribution Programme for Tribal Farmers of Canacona, Goa

An exposure visit cum input distribution programme for Scheduled Tribe (ST) farmers was organized by ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, today at the institute campus under the TSP programme.

The programme commenced with a welcome address, during which the objectives of the initiative were outlined, along with the importance of institutional support in strengthening the livelihoods of tribal farming communities.

This was followed by an address highlighting the distribution of agricultural inputs and the benefits of adopting improved farming practices for enhancing productivity and income.

An interactive session with the farmers was also conducted, where participants shared their experiences, concerns and future requirements related to agriculture and allied activities. The interaction provided a valuable platform for farmers to express their needs and offer suggestions on how ICAR–CCARI could further support tribal farmers in improving their agricultural productivity and livelihood opportunities.

As part of the programme, various planting materials and agricultural inputs were distributed among the farmers, including 20 saplings each of curry leaves, nutmeg, guava and coconut, along with 40 mango saplings and 20 bags of vermicompost (100 kg) and 200 kg PROM aimed at promoting sustainable horticulture and soil health management.

Following the distribution, the visiting farmers were taken for a field exposure visit to the aquaculture demonstration facilities at ICAR–CCARI. During the visit, they were introduced to several innovative aquaculture systems and technologies, including aquaculture pond systems, floating crab barrel culture, duck-cum-fish cage culture, hapa-based nursery rearing techniques, culture practices of Pangas catfish (Pangasius pangasius), and the real-time AI-based water quality monitoring system. The farmers showed keen interest in the technologies demonstrated and actively interacted with the scientists and technical staff to understand the practical applications, management practices and potential benefits of these systems for livelihood enhancement.

The programme provided the farmers with an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge about modern aquaculture practices and integrated farming approaches that could be adopted at the village level.

The programme was conducted for farmers from Indrawada, Chal and Bhuper areas of Gaodongrim village in Canacona, Goa, with a total participation of 20 farmers from different parts of the village.
