Zonal Workshop on KVKs of Zone-IV Organized

Zonal Project Directorate, Zone-IV, Kanpur organized Zonal Workshop on KVKs of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand during 21st May, 2014 at Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR), Kanpur.

Prof. H.S. Gaur, Vice-Chancellor, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology (SVPUA&T), Meerut inaugurated the workshop. In his address, he said that KVKs must work on on-farm experiments based on location specific problems and low cost interventions need to be promoted among farmers. Prof. Gaur stressed upon the promotion of scientists and farmers interface to disseminate the latest technologies and innovation.

Prof. Munna Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSAUA&T), Kanpur chaired the inaugural session. In his remarks, he focused more on skill oriented programmes and enterprises, interaction of KVK experts with farmers to develop realistic action plan and appropriate technology application.

Dr. A.K. Singh, Assistant Director General (Extension), ICAR stated that regular visits of KVK experts to the state agricultural universities and ICAR institutes is needed for further learning. He said that technology Cafeteria, soil testing labs, vermi compost units, bee keeping, integrated farming system, resource conservation technologies, etc. should be developed and maintained for educating farmers and extension workers at KVK level.

Dr. N.P. Singh, Director, IIPR, Kanpur highlighted the success of harnessing pulses productivity programme in collaboration with Zonal Project Directorates and 137 KVKs of 11 states across the country.

Dr. P.S. Naik, Director, Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi emphasized upon the retaining the rural youth in agriculture. He said there is large network of KVKs having around 10,000 KVK experts and suggested that quality seed production, mushroom cultivation, value addition, etc. Bio control agents may be developed at the KVK.

Dr. S.K. Dubey, Head, CSWCRTI, RS, Agra; Dr. V.K. Mishra, Head, CSSRI, RS, Lucknow; Dr. P.K. Varshney, Principal Scientist, NBFGR, Lucknow; Dr. A.B. Rai, Principal Scientist, IIVR, Varanasi; Dr. B.P. Singh, Principal Scientist, IVRI, Bareilly; Dr. S.K. Mishra; Principal Scientist, CISH, Lucknow also shared their views and usable technologies for promotion by KVKs.

Earlier, Dr. Atar Singh, Zonal Project Director, Zone-IV, Kanpur welcomed the welcomed the dignitaries and discussed the climate resilient technologies, integrated farming system models, mini seed processing units, portable carp hatchery, e-linkage, resource conservation technologies etc. for benefit of farming community.

Dr. Y.P.S. Dabas, Director Extension Education, GBPUAT, Pantnagar; Dr. Babu Ram, Director Extension, SVPUAT, Meerut; Dr. Samir Pal, Director Extension, CSAUAT, Kanpur; Dr. S.P. Singh, Director Extension, NDUAT, Faizabad; and Dr. Lakhan Singh, Principal Scientist, ZPD, Zone-IV, Kanpur critically reviewed the progress KVKs and gave important suggestions for improving KVK system.

In concluding session on 21 May, 2014, Dr. Sanjeev Gupta, Project Coordinator (MULLaRP), IIPR, Kanpur suggested that KVKs should become self depend on quality seed production for fulfilling the need of concerned district. Dr. S.K. Singh, Head, Social Science, IIPR; Dr. Shantanu Kumar Dubey, Senior Scientist; Heads of Departments of IIPR were also present on the occasion.

Dr. Lakhan Singh, Principal Scientist, Zonal Project Directorate, Kanpur coordinated the programme and proposed vote of thanks.
