Progress of DWM, Bhubaneswar Reviewed

Dr. Alok K. Sikka, Deputy Director General (NRM), ICAR visited Directorate of Water Management (DWM), Bhubaneswar on 7-8th May, 2014 to review the programme-wise progress.

During the interactive meeting, Dr. Sikka suggested to apply frontier research technologies like nano technology, bioremediation, geoinformatics to solve the water management problems at national level. He also emphasized upon the coordination in related AICRPs like AICRP on Irrigation Water Management, AICRP on Dryland Agriculture, AICRP on Farming Systems, AICRP on Agro-meteorology etc. Dr. Sikka stressed on utility of simulation modeling in farming system research.

The water portal developed by DWM was also demonstrated to Dr. Sikka. He also interacted with the administrative, technical and supporting staff of the Institute.

Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Director, DWM welcomed Dr. Sikka and briefed about the different programmes being conducted in the Directorate.

Earlier, on 7th May, 2014, Dr. Sikka reviewed the progress of work under NICRA project operated at Parvatiya village of Dhenkanal district and Gudpada village of Cuttack district. He emphasized upon the need to conduct integrated studies on water and nutrient used efficiency under drip fertigation system and suggested to adopt conservation agriculture along with drip irrigation. On the occasion, Dr. Sikka also interacted with the farmers of the NICRA villages and expressed satisfaction over the positive response from the farmers about technological interventions for climate change adaptation. 

About 150 farmers participated in the interactive programme.
