ICAR Felicitated Saina Nehwal

Saina says, No. 1 rank is not really very far

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research felicitated Saina Nehwal, the youth icon of India, in a simple ceremony held here today. The international badminton star belongs to ICAR family as her proud father Dr. Harvir Singh is an esteemed scientist in Directorate of Oilseeds Research at Hyderabad, a constituent of ICAR.

After notching up a hat-trick of international titles recently, world no. 3 badminton player Saina said that no. 1 rank is not really far for her. While expressing her gratitude to her father and ICAR family for their relentless support during her struggle, she assured to reach no. 1 position at earliest. Speaking as chief guest in the felicitation ceremony she said that currently her main focus is to work hard and play well in the forthcoming world championships and the commonwealth games at Delhi.

While remembering her childhood days, she gave full marks to the long and tough training sessions and motivation and support provided by her parents for the remarkable success. Saina was full of memories of visiting her father’s office where she got profuse encouragement and best wishes for her bright career. She was very homely with the agricultural scientists’ fraternity.


Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director General, ICAR felicitated Saina with a memento and called her a global celebrity and star belonging to ICAR family. He said that now Saina is a source of inspiration for 120 crore Indian people and we, as a member of her family, are basking in the glory. While lauding her outstanding achievements, he made special mention of Arjuna Puruskar and Padamshree which she received at the young age of 19 and 20 year respectively. Wishing her all success in her future endeavors, Dr. Ayyappan urged her to become brand ambassador of ICAR.

Dr. R.S. Paroda, former Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR and Chairman, TAAS and Dr. Mangala Rai, former Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR rembered their long association with Dr. Harvir Singh and appreciated his extraordinary devotion and sacrifice for providing necessary support to Saina with his limited resources. Dr. Harvir Singh expressed his profound gratitude to the ICAR family for honoring Saina such magnificently.

Earlier, Sri Rajiv Mehrishi, Additional Secretary, DARE and Secretary, ICAR, complimented Saina on behalf of whole ICAR family and wished her good luck for forthcoming tournaments.
