Maintain the traditional knowledge and skill, says Prof Gupta

The contribution of community as well as individual is very vital for maintaining the traditional knowledge and skill generation after generation and these must be recognized in a formal way, said Professor Anil K. Gupta, Executive Vice-chairman, National Innovative Foundation (NIF). He was addressing in one day intractive session on documentation and patenting of Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) held in Medziphema on 25 April 2009 by National Innovation Foundation in Collaboration with National Research Centre on Mithun, Jharnapani, Nagaland.

Professor Gupta also feels the need to map the traditional knowledge and skill of different tribes of Nagaland and document them, so that they can be preserved and popularized. For this he wants to have a collaborative programme with KVKs, Government departments and researchers at university and ICAR institutes for extensive survey and documentation of ITKs. Professor Gupta assured the help of NIF in validation and patenting these ITKs.

He also discussed about various indigenous technologies documented by NIF and patents that have been obtained in favour of the communities/individuals who have contributed for sustaining and developing the knowledge for the social benefits.

Earlier, Dr Chandan Rajkhowa, Director, National Research Centre on Mithun, welcomed Professor Gupta and the participants. He shared his experience about the wisdom and rich knowledge of the tribal population living in this unique geographical area located in north eastern part of our country for a healthy and comfortable living. He also mentioned various ITKs that have been generated by different tribes and their ancestors.

Professor Anil K. Gupta has visited different laboratories of National Research Centre on Mithun, Jharnapani, Nagaland and highly acclaimed the working atmosphere of the institute where there is a blending of excellence and social responsibility, which will create a new bench mark of accountability. 

The Programme was attended by programme coordinators/SMSs of different Krishi Vigyan Kendras of Nagaland, Director Agriculture Govt. of Nagaland, Dean and faculty members of SASARD, Nagaland University.
