3 - 4 June, 2022, Port Blair
The ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands in collaboration with the Andaman Science Association and Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi organized the two-day Virtual National Conference on “Underutilized Horticultural Genetic Resources: Conservation and Utilization” from 3rd to 4th June, 2022.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Chittaranjan Kole, President, International Climate Resilient Crop Genomics Consortium; International Phytomedomics & Nutriomics Consortium; Genome India International; Former Vice-Chancellor, BCKV, Kalyani & Raja Ramanna Fellow inaugurated the Conference. He emphasized on conserving the precious biodiversity of the Islands and its sustainable utilization for mitigating the challenges posed by the climate change.

Delivering the valedictory address, Dr. Anand Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticultural Science), ICAR stressed on the need to take-up a systematic research on the perennial lesser known horticultural species, especially, in the wake of climate change.
Dr. T.V.R.S. Sharma, Former Member, GB, ICAR emphasized on the vulnerability of the Island ecosystem to climate change and the role of crop wild relatives in meeting the challenges of the horticultural sector.

The Guest of Honor during the inaugural ceremony, Dr. B.K. Pandey, ADG (Horticultural Science), ICAR accentuated on the native species and the urgent need of research on them.
The Guest of Honor during the inaugural ceremony, Dr. N.K. Krishna Kumar, Former Deputy Director General (Horticultural Science), ICAR & Former Regional Representative, Biodiversity International outlined the interdependence of the various organisms which forms the balance of the system in total.
In his keynote address, Padma Shri, Dr. Brahma Singh, Founder, Prof. Brahma Singh Horticultural Foundation, New Delhi underlined the importance of the underutilized horticultural genetic resources with special reference to Sea Buckthorn.
Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair & President, Andaman Science Association highlighted the main objective of the Conference. He also underlined the work being carried out by the Institute in the field of horticultural genetic resources.
Dr. S. Dam Roy, Former Director, ICAR-CIARI emphasized on the timeliness of conducting the Conference on such important aspect.
A total of 291 participants from 89 Organizations of 30 States / Union Territories participated in the Conference.
