The ICAR–Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram successfully organized a three-day training programme on “Principles and Practices of Soil, Plant and Water Analysis” for the officials of the Department of Agriculture Development and Farmers’ Welfare, Govt. of Kerala, during 02–04 June 2026.
The programme was designed to strengthen the capacity of agricultural officers in promoting soil test based balanced fertiliser application, improving soil health, integrated nutrient management and sustainable crop production, in alignment with the objectives of Khet Bachao Abhhiyan.

Over the course of the training, participants engaged in hands-on sessions on soil and water quality assessment, formulation of soil test based nutrient recommendations, and strategies for water conservation. The fundamental aspects related to soil sampling, preparation of various reagents, analysis of soil physical and chemical properties and the quality assessment of liming materials were covered in an elaborate manner. They were also introduced to instrumentation and the fundamental principles of analytical techniques for enabling them to do the analysis of soil, plant and water samples with greater precision and accuracy.

In her presidential address, Dr G. Suja, Director (I/c), ICAR-CTCRI, Trivandrum emphasized the importance of such need based training programmes in the present scenario, to reduce chemical fertilisers for the maintenance of soil health leading to farmers’ prosperity and secure future.
