Shri Gyanendra D. Tripathi, Additional Secretary, DARE & Secretary, ICAR visited ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, today to review the functioning, research programmes, achievements, infrastructure and future priorities of the Bureau. During the visit, the Secretary held detailed discussion and reviewed the progress of various research, conservation, documentation and capacity-building programmes being implemented by ICAR-NBFGR.
The review covered the Bureau’s major scientific initiatives related to fish genetic resource conservation, biodiversity assessment, characterization and utilization of fish germplasm, genomics and molecular approaches, aquatic biodiversity conservation, and sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.
Shri Tripathi appreciated the contributions of ICAR-NBFGR and encouraged the scientific community to focus on emerging challenges and opportunities of national priorities in fish genetic resources, particularly in the context of climate change, biodiversity conservation, sustainable fisheries, aquaculture development and food and livelihood security.
The Secretary emphasized the need for outcome-oriented and impactful research, greater convergence among multidisciplinary programmes, strengthening of institutional collaborations, and effective translation of scientific outputs into technologies, management strategies and policy support.
Dr Kajal Chakraborty, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, expressed gratitude to Dr Tripathi for his valuable guidance and assured continued efforts towards achieving scientific excellence and delivering meaningful outcomes for the conservation and sustainable utilization of India’s aquatic genetic resources.
