IMTA is cultivation of fish species along with both organic extractive and inorganic extractive aquatic species to create balanced systems for environmental sustainability. ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai in collaboration with the Directorate of Fisheries, Govt. of Jharkhand successfully demonstrated the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture farming model at Dorwa-Kundwa village, Hazaribagh District code No 332 of Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, Jharkhand.

In the current demonstration, Indian major carps (fed species), organic extractive species (freshwater pearl mussel, Lamellidens marginalis) and inorganic extractive species (chestnut, Trapa natans) were farmed together. Indian major carps (1:1:1) were stocked @ 10000 numbers/ha. Chest nuts and fresh water pearl mussels were planted in 15 and 10% of pond surface area, respectively.
The demonstration programme was initiated in January, 2025 and after nine months of the culture, partial harvest of fish and chest nut were carried out by the tribal farmers, which was found to be lucrative and economical.

This technology not only met the demand of fish seed but also produces the additional crop of chestnut and freshwater pearl mussel. Therefore, this model proved to be an economically viable and may be promoted as a livelihood option for the tribal farmers in the state of Jharkhand.
