ICAR–KVK North Goa Organises In-Service Training on Scientific Pig Farming for Technology Manager Officials of Nagaland

ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa in collaboration with AICRP on Pig, Goa centre organised a one-day on campus in-Service training on ‘Scientific Pig Farming’ today. The programme was organised at ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa for the participants of ATMA–Mokokchung, Nagaland.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR–CCARI, who highlighted importance of integrated farming system and emphasised the potential of improved pig germplasm, particularly the Goya crossbred pig, for enhancing productivity and farmers’ livelihoods of Goa and adjoining coastal areas.

The training programme covered the scope and importance of scientific pig farming, Indian and exotic pig breeds, crossbreeding and artificial insemination. Successful field experiences from Goa were shared, where crossbred pigs achieved 100–120 kg body weight at 10–12 months of age. Practical demonstrations on semen collection and artificial insemination were also conducted. Essential aspects of farm management, including housing hygiene, piglet care, sow management and balanced feeding, were discussed.

The production performance of Goya crossbred pigs was highlighted, along with the principles of selecting superior boars and sows, breeding-value-based selection and genetic improvement for enhanced growth, reproductive efficiency and economic returns.

Reproductive management of boars and sows was addressed, with emphasis on oestrus detection, optimum breeding time, artificial insemination management, pregnancy care and lactation management to improve conception rates, farrowing performance and piglet productivity.

Major infectious diseases of pigs were also discussed, with emphasis on disease prevention through farm biosecurity, strategic deworming, vaccination and hygienic management to reduce morbidity and production losses.

Scientific pig feeding was covered, focusing on balanced diets, safe utilisation of locally available feed resources and properly processed food waste to improve growth, feed efficiency and attainment of market weight.

An exposure visit to a commercial piggery farm at Karmali was organised, providing participants with practical insights into scientific pig production, farm management and field-level adoption of improved practices.

The trainees also visited different animal units and facilities developed in the institute campus. The training was attended by seven participants two Block Technology Managers (BTMs) and five Assistant Technology Managers (ATMs) from the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Mokokchung District, Nagaland, comprising three males and four females.
