ICAR-CIFE Kolkata Centre organizes Kisan Goshti-cum-Awareness Programme under Khet Bachao Abhiyaan at Hooghly- a high fertilizer consuming district of West Bengal

A kisan goshti cum awareness programme was organized under Khet Bachao Abhiyaan at Berabere, Arambagh, Hooghly district of West Bengal today. The district is recognized as one of the top 100 intensive fertilizer use district in India. The programme witnessed a fruitful interaction with the farmers on different aspects of agriculture, aquaculture and animal husbandry.

Farmers were sensitized on balanced use of chemical fertilizers including use of micronutrients, organic manures, green manuring, mulching, use of drift and sprinkler irrigation and another climate smart resource management techniques.

More emphasis was given on soil test-based fertilizer application before crop sowing and adoption of organic and natural farming to increase the organic carbon of soil. Besides, farmers were also informed regarding judicious application of pesticides and their safe handling during application along with disposal of empty containers.

The farmers were well informed about the integrated fish farming with other components like cattle, poultry, goat etc, where the organic manures from the animal components can be incorporated in fish pond to get maximum profit with low input use.

Farmers were made aware about the low-cost farm made fish feed which they can prepared in their premises from the locally available ingredients and they can easily reduce the dependency on costly pelleted fish feed.

At the end of the programme few leaflets on composite fish culture, application of lime in aquaculture, judicious and safe use of pesticides etc were distributed among the farmers. A demonstration on pond water quality was also done by analysing the pH of water with CIFE pH test kit.

The farmers actively participated in the discussion by sharing their problems, experience and they expressed their willingness for reduced dependency on chemical fertilizer use and more use of organic manures and biopesticides.

The programme was participated by total 55 farmers from three villages of Hooghly including 12 female farmers.
