ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Sri Vijaya Puram, has successfully registered its pioneering invention the Air Layering Bag with the Indian Patent Office. This innovation is a promising one for the propagation of perennial tree species, which are traditionally difficult to root using conventional cutting methods.
Air layering is a specialized horticultural technique used for mass multiplication of woody plants. The operation is specialized and only trained personnel could do it efficiently. However, in the recent past, there has been an increasing interest among the urban dwellers about gardening and nursery techniques and hence, the need for a simplified solution has become increasingly evident.

Responding to this demand, researchers at ICAR-CIARI have developed a ready-to-use Air Layering Bag designed to make the process more user-friendly. Even amateur gardeners and untrained individuals can now perform air layering with minimal guidance.
This invention would not only come handy to the amateur garden enthusiasts, but also reduces the time required for doing the air layering operation. This user-centric invention is expected to benefit a wide range of stakeholders from hobbyists to professional nurserymen engaged in the multiplication of fruit trees, spices, and ornamental plants that are traditionally propagated by air layering technique.
