The Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore, has developed 'FishProt'—a comprehensive biological fish proteomic database designed for the discovery and evaluation of biomarkers. This database contains information on various fish species. Currently, FishProt includes data on the muscle proteomes of the Indian Major Carp (IMC) *Catla catla* and the riverine catfishes *Sperata seenghala* and *Rita rita*; the liver proteome of the murrel *Channa striatus*; and the plasma proteome of the Indian Major Carp *Labeo rohita*.
FishProt is a web-based database. It has been developed using open-source technologies: Apache, PHP, and MySQL. It is linked to other proteomics and bioinformatics databases—such as NCBI and Swiss-Prot—as well as proteomics societies, including SPS, BSPR, and PSI (Proteomics Society, India).
This database is updated regularly. For this, see http:/cifri.ernet.in/fishprot.html
