In a concerted effort to strengthen sustainable agricultural practices and promote soil health, the Ramkrishna Ashram Krishi Vigyan Kendra (RAKVK), Nimpith, West Bengal, in collaboration with the Reliance Foundation and ICAR–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata, successfully organized a farmers’ empowerment programme through video conferencing today. The programme was conducted under the ongoing campaign on balanced use of fertilizers, focusing on enhancing farmers’ awareness of scientific nutrient management and the critical role of biofertilizers.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI Kolkata, emphasized the critical importance of balanced fertilizer use in sustaining soil health and crop productivity. He highlighted that judicious application of nutrients based on soil testing and crop requirements must be complemented with the integration of biofertilizers to enhance nutrient efficiency, improve soil biological activity, and reduce dependency on chemical inputs. Stressing the role of Jan Bhagidari, he underscored that community participation can accelerate the adoption of integrated plant nutrition practices. He described such initiatives as dynamic knowledge platforms that blend scientific advancements with field-level experiences, enabling farmers to address soil degradation while ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability.

Dr. C.K. Mondal, Head, RAKVK, Nimpith, emphasized the role of KVKs in promoting balanced fertilizer use through location-specific, soil test–based advisories, enabling efficient nutrient management and sustainable productivity.
The integration of biofertilizers with chemical inputs to enhance nutrient use efficiency, improve soil health, and sustain ecological balance was also highlighted during the programme.
An engaging Q&A session gave farmers a platform to seek advice and discuss solutions to their concerns, making the session truly interactive. With 45 progressive farmers from West Bengal participating, the programs served as a beacon of support and shared knowledge, illuminating the path forward in their journey toward maintaining soil health.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from farmers across the region and served as a significant step toward promoting sustainable nutrient management practices. It reaffirmed the collective commitment of institutions and stakeholders to empower farmers with knowledge, foster soil health, and ensure resilient agricultural systems for the future.
