The Annual Group Meet of Rabi Pulses was inaugurated today at Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology, Kanpur, in which over 150 scientists from different ICAR Institutes, State Agricultural Universities, BARC, and CGIAR Institutes (ICRISAT and ICARDA) participated.
During the inauguration, Dr M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR, emphasized the importance of breeding for nutrient use efficiency and the need to break the yield barrier in pulses. He highlighted the role of micronutrients in enhancing pulse productivity and advocated for a shift towards pulse-based agri-food systems to achieve sustainability, resilience, and nutritional security.
Dr Sanjeev Gupta, Vice Chancellor of CSAUA&T Kanpur, discussed strategies for achieving self-sufficiency in pulse production.
Dr D. K. Yadava, Deputy Director General (Crop Science), ICAR pointed out the challenges that limit pulse productivity. He emphasized the development of high-yielding pulse varieties and the need to identify specific traits suitable for rice fallow conditions.
Dr Sanjeev Jha, Assistant Director General (O&P) at ICAR, stressed the importance of farmer-centric research.
Dr G. P. Dixit, Director, ICAR- Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur outlined future research priorities for pulses at ICAR-IIPR.
Dr. Shailesh Tripathi, Project Coordinator of the AICRP on Rabi Pulses, presented key research progress for the year 2025-26.
