A two-day National Workshop on “NBPGR-NAGS Partnership on Efficient Management and Use of Plant genetic Resources” is being organized during 29-30 July, 2011 at NBPGR, New Delhi and attended by over 70 participants representing various ICAR institutes and State Agricultural Universities, collectively known as National Active Germplasm Sites (NAGS). Dr. R.S. Paroda, Chairman, Haryana Farmers’ Commission and TAAS inaugurated the workshop as the Chief Guest and Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary DARE & DG, ICAR presided over the Inaugural Session. Other important dignitaries in the Inaugural Session include Dr. S. Mahadevappa, Ex-Chairman, ASRB; Dr. B.S. Dhillon, Vice Chancellor, PAU, Ludhiana; Dr. R.S. Rana, Member NBA and Ex- Director, NBPGR; Prof. S.K. Datta, DDG (CS), ICAR, and several other officials of the Council.
The workshop essentially focuses on strengthening national networking on acquisition, conservation, evaluation, strengthening database on Plant Genetic Resources information, utilization of crop germplasm, and policy issues ensuring harmonized PGR management. Germplasm management is a huge task particularly in the context of richness of genetic resources and agro-ecological diversity in the country. It can be efficiently done only in a coordinated manner by networking with ICAR institutes, State Agricultural Universities and other stakeholders with NBPGR playing a pivotal role. The deliberations will go along way in strengthening and nurturing the existing network of NBPGR and NAGS with particular emphasis on evaluation and utilization of PGR for sustainability of country’s agricultural production.
Dr. Paroda, in his inaugural speech, emphasized on the need for creating an AICRP on Evaluation and Use of Plant Genetic Resources at the Council for addressing the efficient management and efficient utilization of PGR as a national network. He further emphasized on integrating all National Bureaux dealing with plant, animal, fish, microbe and insects and creating a high level advisory body for various policy decisions and monitoring of country’s genetic resources. Dr. Ayyappan emphasized on strengthening pre-breeding/genetic enhancement initiatives and enhanced sharing of genetic resources for use in crop improvement at national level.
The outcome of the workshop is expected to result in a strong national network linking PGR conservation to its effective use by bringing the curators of germplasm and its users together.
