Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to managing pests by integrating multiple methods to keep pest populations below economically damaging levels while minimising risks to human health and the environment.
IPM emphasises prevention, regular monitoring and informed decision-making, with non-chemical methods given priority. Pesticides are used only, when necessary, at recommended doses and as part of an integrated pest management strategy.
The approach combines a range of methods, including cultural, physical, mechanical, varietal, biological, bio-rational, biotechnological and chemical measures, depending on the crop, pest and prevailing field conditions. By integrating these methods, IPM helps manage pest populations effectively while promoting sustainable crop production and reducing unnecessary reliance on chemical pesticides.
Farmers and other stakeholders can contribute to responsible pest management by understanding the principles of IPM, adopting appropriate pest management methods and using pesticides judiciously when required.
