Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR, visited ICAR-National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics, Bengaluru, where he inaugurated a suite of upgraded facilities. These included a modernized Training Hall equipped with a state-of-the-art video wall, a renovated Committee Room, an enhanced Reception area, and a newly developed Postgraduate Hostel for students of the ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute Academic Hub hosted at ICAR-NIVEDI.

Dr Baldev R. Gulati, Director, ICAR-NIVEDI, briefed the DDG on the institute’s strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening livestock disease surveillance and preparedness. He highlighted ongoing efforts to tackle emerging threats, including the global spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (SAT-1 serotype), and innovations such as bulk milk-based surveillance, certified buffalo meat systems, and the establishment of sentinel surveillance sites across states for longitudinal disease monitoring.
Dr Gulati also outlined key priorities for the current year, including pilot implementation of disease-free compartmentalization in Kolar district, enhanced strategies for bovine tuberculosis control, and the development of digital tools, including a chatbot to support field veterinarians. He further emphasized the integration of NIVEDI’s NADRES and chatbot platforms with national digital ecosystems such as the Bharat Pashudhan and Bharat Vistaar portals.

Commending the institute’s forward-looking approach, Dr Bhatta appreciated ICAR-NIVEDI’s impactful contributions, including the successful acquisition of over 50 externally funded projects from national and international agencies. He also lauded the institute’s significant role in supporting national livestock disease control programmes and its green, clean, and vibrant campus environment that fosters scientific excellence.
