ICAR-NAARM, Hyderabad Organizes El Nino Event-based Agricultural Contingency Plan Implementation Launch Workshop in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh

ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management, Hyderabad organized El Nino event-based agricultural contingency plan implementation launch workshop at KVK, Banavasi, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh today. The purpose was to spearhead the contingency plan implementation towards mitigating El Nino event-based effects on agriculture and socio-economic conditions of the farming community in Kurnool district.

Dr Gopal Lal, Joint Director, ICAR-NAARM in his Presidential address emphasized the need for supporting the livelihood of Kurnool farmers, who are severely affected by El Nino event 2026 through responsive and adequate contingency measures for agriculture and allied sectors. He also appreciated the ICAR-NAARM team and team of KVK, Banavasi for the pro-active initiatives.

The methodology followed for planning contingency measures was explained, along with the possible severity of the 2026 El Niño. The need for preparedness towards such a contingency scenario was emphasized. The efforts undertaken to address the needs of farmers in Kurnool district during the El Niño-affected scenario were also highlighted, along with the existing gaps that need to be bridged to support farmers’ livelihoods.

The workshop had participation of scientists and development department officials representing ICAR-CRIDA, Hyderabad; ICAR-IIOR, Hyderabad; ICAR-IIOPR, Hyderabad; ANGRAU, Tirupati; Dr. YSRHU, Venkataramanagudem; SVVU, Tirupati, Department of Agriculture and Horticulture; NHRDF, New Delhi and KVK Professionals, who all shared the contingency pan strategies from their respective sectors for the benefit of farmers.

Initially, Dr Gopal Lal inaugurated an exhibition of input agencies (11) which was arranged in the venue for the benefit of farmers of Kurnool district (400), who participated in the event.
