The invention titled “Seed Coating Composition Based on Bioactive Botanicals and a Method for Preparation Thereof” (Patent No. 58801) was granted patent protection on 30 April 2026. The innovative technology utilizes food-grade polymers and biopolymers combined with naturally extracted essential oils from aromatic plants such as lemongrass, palmarosa, cinnamon, neem, and clove to develop a botanical seed coating composition for stored grain protection.

The developed formulation offers a sustainable and safer alternative to conventional chemical pesticides used in post-harvest storage systems. The patented composition demonstrated significant insecticidal and repellent activity against pulse beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis), one of the major pests causing substantial losses in stored grains and pulses.

Dr Manish Das, Director, ICAR-DMAPR, Anand, stated that the achievement reflects the institute’s continued commitment towards developing innovative herbal and plant-based technologies for sustainable agriculture and post-harvest management.
