Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General, (ICAR), visited the ICAR–Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology, Ranchi today, accompanied by Dr. D. K. Yadava, Deputy Director General (Crop Sciences), ICAR.
Dr. Jat underscored the unique opportunity at ICAR-IIAB to work at the interface of plants, animals, fishes, and microbes, and recommended formal collaborations with all Subject Matter Divisions (SMDs) of ICAR to harness national scientific talent. He assured that provisions for additional manpower would be made in the future and called for enhanced synergy and complementarity in the institute’s research approach.
Dr. Jat lauded the institute’s rapid progress and acknowledged the efforts of Dr. Rakshit and his team in establishing state-of-the-art facilities within a short period. He emphasized the need to bring biotechnology interventions to “forgotten crops” once central to tribal food systems positioning them as “opportunity crops” that can be improved for both economic competitiveness and nutritional security.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Yadava appreciated the establishment of world-class facilities at ICAR-IIAB. He stated that with infrastructure development nearing completion, the institute must now prioritize impact-oriented scientific outputs to maximize its potential.
Dr. Sujay Rakshit, Director, ICAR-IIAB, outlined the institute’s progress, research initiatives, and developmental activities. He highlighted that despite being a relatively young institute with a small but dedicated team, the institute has made significant strides in advancing its research mandate and infrastructure.
The visit concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. K. K. Krishnani, Joint Director (Academics), ICAR-IIAB, Ranchi, who expressed gratitude for the guidance and encouragement provided by the dignitaries in furthering the institute’s mission.
