ICAR-National Research Centre on Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim celebrated its 20th foundatiuon day here today.
Padma Shree, Dr. K. L. Chadha, Former Deputy Diector General (Hort.), ICARand National Professor was Chief Guest of the occasion, delivered foundation day lecture on ‘Climate Change & Climate Smart Horticulture. He highlighted the need for developing horticultural produce which are capable of challenging climate change. He said that this can be achieved by adopting climate samrt horticulture, which includes a reasonable available land and applications of eco-friendly technologies. He also stressed on cluster approach for promoting year round cultivation of vegatables and flower crops. Dr. Chadha released a Paphiopedilum variety ‘Sheetal 1’ developed at institute and website of Institute.
Dr. T. Janakiram, Assistant Diector General (Hort.), appreciated the efforts of the institute and said Sikkim to be known as orchid & organic home state in coming years with presence of world orchidarium.
Mr. T. P. Bhutia , Addl. Director (Hort.), Govt of Sikkim suggested for collaboration with HCCD department for effective dissemination of knowledge to farmers.
Prof. P. K. Srivastava, Dean, Colleage of Agricultural Engineering & Post Harvest Technology; Sikkim highlighted the importance of post-harvest and packaging.
Dr. Chakarbarti, Director, ICAR-CPRI, Shimla briefed the importance of genomic research and doubling of income through through horticultural cropping pattern.
Dr. D. R. Singh, Director in his inaugural welcome address, highlighted the significant achievements of the institute and awards received during the year.
Orchid conservation pledge was taken by farmers on the occaaaion.
