ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Gangtok celebrated the 38th Foundation Day on 10th October 2013 at its Research Farm. Shri D.N. Takarpa, Minister of Agricuture and Horticulture, Govt of Sikkim, inaugurated the celebration by lighting the ceremonial lamp as Chief Guest.
In his inaugural address, Shri Takarpa appreciated the Sikkim Centre for its role in introducing high yielding varieties of vegetables, field crops, improved breeds of dairy and poultry along with organic package of practices for ginger and large cardamom. He emphasized on research strategy for introduction of pest and disease resistant varieties of various crops, technologies for soil and water management, off-season crop production, low cost crop and animal production technologies to improve the agriculture scenario in Sikkim.
Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Sikkim Centre delivered the Foundation Day Key Lecture on ‘ICAR Sikkim Centre: A way forward towards the agricultural development of Sikkim’.He briefed about the achievements of ICAR Sikkim Centre in the field of research and extension since its inception during 1976.
Shri D.N. Sapkota,Chairman, Agriculture and Horticulture Board, Govt of Sikkim;Shri S. Pradhan, Secretary, Department of FSAD and HCCD, Govt of Sikkim; and Shri D. P. Sharma, Secretary, Department of AH, LF& VS, Govt of Sikkim also gave their valuable remarks on the occasion.
Nine technical folders on applicable technologies were released and critical agricultural inputs were distributed among the farmers. Theme of this programme was ‘Technological Empowerment through Input Support System’.
Senior officials of the state government, line departments, scientists from ICAR institutes and over 150 farmers participated in the programme.
