Successful breeding and spawning demonstration of Singhi under SCSP scheme at Khamar-Chaulia, Dhenkanal, Odisha

A successful demonstration on scientific breeding and spawning of Singhi (Heteropneustes fossilis) was conducted at Khamar-Chaulia village of Dhenkanal district, Odisha, during 27–28 August 2026 under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) Scheme of ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar.

A catfish FRP hatchery had earlier been provided to the beneficiaries to promote self-reliance and improve livelihood opportunities. Prior to the demonstration, the ICAR-CIFA team provided hands-on training on hatchery operation and management and conducted broodstock assessment and selection.

During the programme, mature Singhi brood fish were selected and subjected to induced breeding. Demonstrations were conducted on both natural spawning and stripping methods. The participants were also trained in milt collection, fertilization and egg incubation. An Artemia hatching demonstration was undertaken to ensure live feed availability for hatchlings. The brood fish successfully spawned, while eggs collected through stripping were fertilized and incubated under suitable hatchery conditions. Successful hatching was observed after approximately 18–22 hours. The demonstration enhanced farmers’ confidence and practical knowledge in Singhi breeding, hatchery operation and seed production, contributing towards improved livelihoods and local availability of quality fish seed. The programme was attended by 45 fish farmers and aimed at enhancing their skills in scientific catfish breeding and hatchery management.
