ICAR-IGFRI, Jhansi Trains Veterinary and Extension Officers to Strengthen Green Fodder Production in Madhya Pradesh

To address the prevailing 35–40% green fodder deficit in Madhya Pradesh, the ICAR–Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi, with financial support from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Government of Madhya Pradesh, organized a capacity-building training programme for Veterinary and Extension Officers from different agro-climatic regions of the state. The training was conducted in two batches from 13–15 July and 20–22 July 2026, with a total of 30 officers from various districts of Madhya Pradesh participating in the programme.

Speaking about the programme, the Programme Director stated that the state's green fodder shortage is largely attributed to limited awareness and adoption of improved fodder production technologies. He emphasized that advanced technologies related to fodder production, conservation, and efficient utilization can play a significant role in bridging the existing fodder gap.

The Programme Coordinator highlighted the importance of balanced livestock feeding based on green fodder for enhancing the profitability of animal husbandry. He stressed the need to increase green fodder production and promote conservation of surplus fodder through technologies such as hay, silage, and leaf meal, ensuring year-round availability of quality feed for livestock.

During his interaction with the participants, the Director-in-Charge underscored the importance of effectively implementing the 'Madhya Pradesh State Fodder Development Plan' prepared by ICAR-IGFRI, Jhansi. He emphasized the wider dissemination and adoption of improved fodder production technologies across the state to bridge the gap between fodder demand and supply.

The training programme covered key aspects of fodder production, conservation, and utilization, combining expert lectures with practical demonstrations and interactive sessions on technology dissemination.

Upon successful completion of the programme, the trained Veterinary and Extension Officers will serve as Master Trainers in their respective districts, imparting knowledge to livestock farmers, agri-entrepreneurs, and gaushala managers. The initiative is expected to accelerate the adoption of improved fodder technologies, enhance green fodder availability across Madhya Pradesh, improve livestock productivity, and strengthen farmers' livelihoods.
