Rathindra Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sriniketan, Birbhum, under the jurisdiction of ICAR–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata, organized an outreach programme as part of the Janjatiya Gourav Varsh Pakhwada at Eklavya Model Residential School, Kankutia, Birbhum, with the aim of creating awareness among tribal students about traditional knowledge, sustainable livelihoods and emerging opportunities in the agriculture sector.

Addressing the students, Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR–ATARI, Kolkata, underscored the importance of empowering tribal youth through a balanced integration of modern science and traditional knowledge. He highlighted that such an approach is crucial for community-led development rooted in Jan Sahabhagita. Dr. Dey encouraged students to view agriculture and allied sectors as dignified, future-ready career avenues that foster self-reliance and promote agri-entrepreneurship. He urged them to aspire to become job creators rather than job seekers, contributing to a resilient rural economy capable of revitalizing village livelihoods and inspiring young rural innovators.

As part of the programme, students received hands-on awareness on the identification of medicinal plants, along with insights into their traditional uses, scientific significance and the importance of conserving local flora. Sessions on agri-entrepreneurship introduced livelihood opportunities in pig and goat farming, emphasizing Atmanirbharata and locally feasible income-generating models. Resource persons also highlighted beekeeping as a low-cost, high-return enterprise suitable for tribal households. In addition, students were provided career guidance on agricultural professions, covering opportunities in agricultural education, agri-startups, extension services and skill development pathways.

The programme concluded with interactive discussions, during which students expressed keen interest in pursuing agri-based skills and entrepreneurial opportunities.

The event effectively upheld the spirit of Janjatiya Gourav Varsh by celebrating tribal heritage while equipping youth with knowledge and inspiration to engage with modern agricultural innovations and sustainable livelihood options.

A total of 456 students 234 male and 222 female, all belonging to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community actively participated in the event.
