The ICAR–National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, organised a Stakeholder Meet-cum-Awareness Programme and a Tribal Fishery–Entrepreneurship Summit today at Shergaon, West Kameng district. The event was held under the STC and NEH initiatives as part of the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh 2025 celebrations, with a special focus on “Empowering Tribal Fishers through Capacity Building, Technological Demonstration and Resource Support.”
The programme was graced by Smt. Tsering Wangmu Lama, Zilla Parishad Member, Shergaon; Shri Tagi Yonggam, Deputy Director (Fisheries); Shri Ledo Thungon, Chairman, Garung Thuk Community Centre; Shri Pema Khandu Thungon, District Fisheries Development Officer (DFDO), West Kameng; and Shri Narang Taming, DFDO, Bichom. The officials expressed their gratitude to Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Director, ICAR–NBFGR, for extending support to organise the programme in the tribal-dominated hill region.
The dignitaries appreciated the Department of Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, for its dedicated efforts in expanding aquaculture in remote high-altitude areas through pond development, quality seed distribution, and farmer training programmes. ICAR–NBFGR presented its major national initiatives genetic resource conservation, species documentation, the AqGRISI Aquatic Species Information Portal, aquatic disease diagnostics, cryobanking, and the establishment of Live Germplasm Resource Centres across India. Special emphasis was laid on the significant potential of Arunachal Pradesh’s pristine rivers and natural lakes for aquaculture development and conservation of indigenous fish genetic resources.

As part of the STC and NEH support activities, ICAR–NBFGR distributed essential fishery inputs including fish seed, fish feed, and lime to tribal fishers to promote improved aquaculture practices in the region.
Experts from ICAR–NBFGR, conducted interactive technical sessions on seed quality, feed management, disease diagnostics, and the scope of integrated hill aquaculture. Discussions also centred on community-managed fish sanctuaries, conservation of native fish species, and strategies for developing sustainable fishery clusters in the hill districts.
The programme concluded with a joint commitment by ICAR–NBFGR and the Department of Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, to enhance scientific interventions, biodiversity documentation, and capacity-building efforts in West Kameng and Bichom. The collaborative goal is to develop the region as a model for culturally aligned and environmentally sustainable aquaculture development.
The event brought together tribal fishers, fish farmers, community leaders, and rural youth from West Kameng and Bichom districts, with the aim of strengthening aquaculture-based livelihoods by enhancing scientific awareness, technological adoption, and farmer–entrepreneur linkages.
A total of 200 fish farmers and fishers participated in the programme.
