ICAR-NBFGR Enhances Sustainable Fisheries and Provides Alternative Livelihoods for Tribal Fishers in Coastal Regions

ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, in collaboration with ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, organized a capacity development and fisheries input distribution programme for benefitting vulnerable coastal fishers at Cacra village, Goa, under the Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) today.

Dr U. K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, briefed the fishers on various aspects related to sustainable marine fisheries and alternate livelihood through marine ornamental aquaculture.

The dignitaries were briefed on different aspects of subsistence fisheries such as mesh size regulation, fishing holidays, not catching young or brooders, etc. 

Sustainable fishing nets and improved traps were distributed to 47 beneficiaries during the programme. 

A total of 70 active fishers participated in the programme.
