The ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak in collaboration with financial support under the NEH component of ICAR-National Institute of Natural Fibre Engineering and Technology, Kolkata organized a 3-months short course training programme on ‘Yak Hair Based Fabric Making’ in Dirang from 25th October, 2024 to 22nd January, 2025.
Dr Mihir Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NRCY, Dirang in his presidential remarks briefed about the scope & prospects of yak fibre and urged the trainees to take the opportunity and learned every step very skilfully.
Dr Shakyawar, Director, ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata, emphasized the scope and prospects of yak hairs with the benefits of designs in textile manufacturing to make its products more remunerative. He urged the trainees to implement their learning in the training and asked them to come forward for the development of yak fibre-based entrepreneurship for the overall development of yak husbandry in the country.
During this programme trainees were enlightened the knowledge on the fibre quality of yaks in contrast to the synthetic wools and other natural fibres like sheep wool, jute fibre etc. During the period, the trainees were systematically involved in hands-on practices. The trainees also learned knitting and prepared varieties of products like socks, gloves, sweaters, mufflers, and caps using synthetic wools.
The programme concluded with a valedictory ceremony, coinciding with the 36th Foundation Day of the institute. The event was graced by Dr B.C. Deka, Vice-Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, Dr B.S. Prakash, Former Assistant Director General, and the Directors of the collaborating institutes.
A total of 12 trainees were benefitted from the training programme.
