SERB Training on Agro-Meteorological Techniques

ICAR-Central Research Institute of Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad organized Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Govt. of India sponsored 21-day training program on “Agrometeorological techniques for risk assessment and management of extreme events” during 01-21 September 2015.

Dr. B.V. Ramana Rao, Chief Guest of the inaugural session stressed on need for systematic research approach to extreme events in developing suitable adaptation strategies.

Dr. Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director, CRIDA felt that these training programs form a platform for knowledge transfer and management and also help in building long-term collaborations between research organizations

The course curriculum included extreme events and their impacts; prediction of extreme weather using climatic models; basic concepts of weather, climate & crop planning; drought impacts on Indian agriculture including early warning systems and management in different crops. Topics on extreme weather risk management; vulnerability assessment; agrometeorological tools in weather risk management; agromet advisories; forewarning of pests and diseases and policies for climatic risk management.

Hands on training on various software included DSSAT, Weather Cock, PET Calculator, and AQUACROP.

The participants of the training program included Scientists/researchers from 16 states across 10 disciplines.
