A training programme on Fabrication of square mesh codend in Dol nets was jointly organized by NETFISH and ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Cochin during 28-31 October, 2015 at Arnala, Maharastra.
Techniques in the fabrication and rigging of square mesh codend was demonstrated to 10 fishermen from the Fishermen Cooperative Society of Arnala. The advantages of square mesh cod end to reduce juvenile fishes were explained to the fishermen. As the mesh lumen remains open in square mesh, it is easy for small fishes and juveniles to escape through the meshes which reduces the quantum of bycatch enabling the conservation of aquatic resources. In addition to these benefits, the quantity of net required for fabricating square mesh codend is less than the requirement for diamond mesh codend of the same dimensions, resulting in lower fabrication costs.
Filed trails of square mesh was carried out on board Dol netter on 31st October, 2015.
