ICAR–National Institute of Natural Fibre Engineering and Technology, Kolkata, organized a five-day National Workshop on ‘Natural Fibre-Based Vegan Leather and Low-Cost Biodegradable Flexible Composites’ from 9–13 March 2026 in hybrid mode under the Consortia Research Platform on Natural Fibres.
The workshop featured expert lectures and hands-on demonstrations on the manufacturing of natural fibre-based biodegradable vegan leather sheets and other flexible composites. A training manual was released during the programme, and certificates were distributed to participants upon successful completion of the training.
The event concluded with a panel discussion chaired by Dr D. B. Shakyawar, Director, ICAR–NINFET, addressing participants’ queries related to plant setup, production processes, and commercialization prospects of vegan leather.
A total of 15 participants, including entrepreneurs, academicians, and research scholars, attended the workshop through both online and offline modes. The workshop marked an important step toward promoting sustainable, natural fibre-based alternatives to animal and synthetic leather.
