5 November 2025, Malda
In celebration of the strength, resilience, and contributions of tribal women in fisheries, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Central Institute For Subtropical Horticulture), Malda, under the administrative control of ICAR–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata, observed International Women Fishers Day on 5 November 2025 at Lalpur Bodra village in Habibpur Block an area predominantly inhabited by tribal communities. The programme formed part of the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwara celebrations and aimed to recognize the pivotal role of tribal women in sustainable fisheries while empowering them through knowledge sharing and livelihood-oriented interventions.

Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, addressed the participants virtually and lauded the leadership and perseverance of tribal women engaged in fisheries. He noted the significance of observing International Women Fishers Day coinciding with Prakash Parv, symbolizing knowledge as the true light guiding communities toward sustainability and self-reliance. Dr. Dey emphasized the need to strengthen fish-based livelihood systems through Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to promote gender equity and climate-resilient livelihoods.
The experts interacted with tribal women and fisher farmers on topics related to sustainable aquaculture, fish marketing, and livelihood enhancement.

A total of 25 farm women and 5 male farmers, along with the CEO of ALOKINI FPO, Habibpur, participated in the event. The discussions focused on the challenges faced by women in fish farming and explored practical solutions for improving productivity through scientific fish culture practices, value addition, and better market linkages to ensure income and nutritional security.
The event underscored KVK Malda’s commitment to advancing gender-inclusive and community-driven development in the tribal regions of West Bengal through capacity building, entrepreneurship promotion, and knowledge dissemination in fisheries and allied sectors.
