ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone VI, Guwahati, commemorated World Environment Day with a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship and sustainable agricultural practices.
The celebrations began with a sapling plantation drive at the ICAR-ATARI campus, led by Dr. G. Kadirvel, Director along with staff members. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Kadirvel highlighted the need to integrate environmental protection with sustainable agriculture, stating, “Eco-friendly farming is essential, not optional, for ensuring food security and building climate resilience for future generations.”
The event was aligned with the ongoing Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, a nationwide campaign aimed at transforming Indian agriculture through scientific innovation, efficient resource use, and farmer empowerment.
Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) under ICAR-ATARI, Zone VI, marked the day by organizing plantation drives, awareness programs, and farmer outreach activities across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
The observance witnessed active participation from farmers, scientists, students, and dignitaries, including Mr. Sashi Kanta Das, Member of Legislative Assembly, Raha; Dr. A.R. Aahmed, District Agriculture Officer, Cachar; Mr. Wanki Lobang, Minister of Environment and Forests, Arunachal Pradesh; Dr. Hemant Ghimerey, Deputy Director of Horticulture, Sikkim; and Ms. Vishnu Rai, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Sikkim.
Interactive sessions, expert lectures, and live demonstrations educated participants on climate-smart agriculture, integrated nutrient management, agroforestry, organic farming, and the use of bio-fertilizers. The programs underscored the need to balance food production with ecological sustainability, encouraging the adoption of biodiversity-friendly and low-impact farming practices.
