Field Day and Animal Health Camp Conducted at Mayem under NICRA Project

ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), North Goa, under the ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI), organized a combined Field Day on Konkan Kanyal goat farming and an Animal Health Camp at Mayem village, Bicholim taluka. The events were held under the Technology Demonstration Component (TDC) of the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project, in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AHVS), Government of Goa, Goa Dairy, and the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), North Goa.

The Field Day focused on promoting the Konkan Kanyal goat breed and its adaptability to local agro-climatic conditions. Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK North Goa, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in bridging the gap between research and grassroots farming. He highlighted the role of field demonstrations in enhancing farmer confidence, fostering innovation, and encouraging the adoption of sustainable livestock practices.

Parallelly, the Animal Health Camp provided essential veterinary services and expert consultations. More than 120 cows were clinically examined, and farmers received expert guidance on enhancing lactation, mastitis prevention, and balanced nutrition. Veterinary medicines, including anthelmintics, liver tonics, calcium supplements, and multivitamins, were distributed to livestock.

In addition, over 150 backyard poultry birds were supplemented with nutritional tonics, and farmers were educated on biosecurity, vaccination protocols, and poultry disease prevention strategies.

A total of 38 farmers (17 for the Field Day and 21 for the Health Camp), including 10 women, benefitted from the integrated program. The event focused on key themes such as clean milk production, reproductive management, strategic deworming, climate-resilient livestock practices, and overall preventive healthcare.
