Dr M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR, visited ICAR–Research Complex for Eastern Region, KVK Ramgarh, today, accompanied by Dr D.K. Yadava, Deputy Director General (Crop Science), ICAR. On the occasion, KVK Ramgarh organized a capacity-building programme for farmers featuring field visits, an exhibition of agricultural technologies and the distribution of critical agricultural inputs to promote sustainable farming practices and enhance farmers’ livelihoods.

During the visit, Dr Jat reviewed the activities of KVK Ramgarh and emphasized the need to strengthen farmer-centric extension approaches through need-based training, awareness of government schemes, promotion of integrated farming systems (IFS) and scientific utilization of rice fallow lands. Interacting with farmers during the Farmers–Scientist Interaction Programme, he encouraged the active involvement of innovative and progressive farmers as resource persons to share successful farming practices and field-level experiences with fellow farmers. He also stressed the development of a simple, farmer-friendly booklet on government schemes, covering eligibility criteria, benefits and application procedures to facilitate access to various government support programmes.

Highlighting the significant potential of rice fallow areas, Dr Jat encouraged farmers to cultivate suitable rabi crops, particularly pulses and oilseeds, according to local agro-climatic conditions and residual soil moisture. He stated that bringing these fallow lands under productive cultivation could promote crop diversification, improve resource-use efficiency and generate additional income. He also underscored the importance of integrated farming systems in enhancing farm productivity, diversifying income sources and strengthening the economic resilience of small and marginal farmers. He encouraged farmers to integrate crops, livestock, poultry, fisheries and horticulture, along with supplementary livelihood activities such as mushroom cultivation and tailoring, wherever feasible and suited to local resources, to create year-round income opportunities.
