To unlock the growing opportunities in the millet sector and strengthen the role of FPOs in creating value from farmers’ produce, ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research, Global Centre of Excellence in Millets (Shree Anna), Hyderabad, commenced a five-day training programme on ‘Millet Production, Processing, Value Addition for Entrepreneurship Development for FPOs of Uttar Pradesh’ today.

The programme is being organised from 1st to 5th September 2026 with the support of the Uttar Pradesh Council of Agricultural Research (UPCAR), the programme focuses on equipping FPOs with scientific knowledge, practical skills and enterprise-oriented approaches across the millet value chain.

The programme has been designed with a clear focus on strengthening the business capabilities of FPOs and enabling them to move beyond production and aggregation. Dr C. Tara Satyavathi, Director, ICAR–IIMR and Chief Course Director, is guiding the programme with an emphasis on building the technical and entrepreneurial capacities of participating FPOs.

Through technical sessions on improved millet production, seed production, processing, value addition and entrepreneurship, participants are being introduced to opportunities for converting millet into diversified, value-added products and developing viable and sustainable business activities.

A major component of the programme is learning through practical exposure and direct interaction with technologies, experts and successful millet enterprises. Participants will undergo hands-on training in primary and secondary processing, learn about machinery layout and best practices, and gain practical experience in preparing diverse millet-based products. Sessions on packaging and labelling, innovation, entrepreneurship and startup opportunities will further help participants understand the requirements for taking products from processing units to the market. The training programme brought together representatives of Farmer Producer Organisations from Uttar Pradesh, creating a platform for knowledge exchange, technical interaction and collective learning.

The programme has been structured to address an important requirement for FPOs building the capability to convert farmers’ produce into higher-value products and sustainable business opportunities. Through exposure to production technologies, processing equipment, product development, packaging, entrepreneurship and successful business models, participants can gain a broader understanding of the technical and operational aspects involved in establishing and strengthening millet-based enterprises. The training therefore seeks to support FPOs in diversifying their activities, improving value realisation, strengthening business operations and developing market-oriented millet products.
