State level coordination meeting for doubling farmers’ income of Sikkim was organized by ICAR- NRC for Orchids, Sikkim today.
Dr. K. M. Bujarbaruah, Vice-Chancellor, Assam Agriculture University, in his inaugural address, discussed the importance of baseline information on present income status of the farmers among small, marginal and large groups to prepare roadmap for doubling the farmer’s income by 2022. He stressed on cropping systems and agro-climatic zone into consideration for selecting the niche crops and livestock as per altitude variations. He opinioned that equal responsibility among the departments, policy makers, technology developers and farmers can achieve the task of doubling farmers’ income.
Smt. Shorab L. Dorjee, Director (Agriculture), Govt. of Sikkim commented non-availability of organic seeds shall be a constraint in production of agricultural crops.
Dr. R. K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR-NOFRI, Sikkim presented the technologies available on low tunnels for vegetable production, moisture conservation, zero tillage, jal kund, crop rotation and integrated farming system with poultry and piggery and shared different concepts for doubling the farmer’s income for Sikkim.
In the concluding remarks, Chairman suggested for focusing the means and strategies for achieving doubling of the farmers’ income in Sikkim by organic farming and framework should commence from rabi season.
The meeting ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. D. R. Singh, Director, ICAR-NRC on Orchids.
