As part of the Centenary Celebrations being organized across the Nation to recognize the contributions made by Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya, the great philosopher and thinker who dedicated all his life towards the nation building and to improve the living status of the poorest of the poor, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has instituted Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Antyodaya Krishi Puruskar (National & Zonal) from this year (2016).
This award is instituted for recognizing the contributions of marginal, small and landless farmers for developing integrated and sustainable models of agricultural farming .
The awards include one award at national level comprising of` Rs.1, 00,000 and 11 zonal awards comprising of Rs. 50,000 each along with a citation and the certificate.
Zone XI
Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare conferred Zonal Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Antyodhyay Krishi Puraskar 2016 for Zone XI to Shri A.Baburaj, an aqua farmer of Kozhikode district of Kerala. The award was presented on 25th September 2016, marking the birth centenary of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya at a function organized at ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode.
Addressing the farmers on this occasion, the Minsiter emphasized the need of recognizing the contribution of small and marginal farmers and the landless to agriculture and its allied sectors.
Shri Singh lauded the efforts of Shri Babu Raj who has been practicing aqua farming for over two decades on his small farm under the technical guidance of ICAR-CMFRI, Kochi and ICAR-CIBA, Chennai. Shri Baburaj has specialized in production of pearl-spot fish in brackish water.
Through his dedication to farming, he has inspired many youngsters to take to brackish water aquaculture in the neighboring villages. He has integrated agro-eco-tourism with aquaculture to enhance his farm income and uses social media effectively to promote his enterprise.
Dr. K. Nirmal Babu, Director, ICAR-IISR Kozhikode and Dr Sreenath Dixit, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Bengaluru participated in the award ceremony.
Farmers, fishermen, scientists from ICAR institutes and State Department Officials were present in the occasion.

Zone-VIII
Shri Hasam Bhai Jumabhai Masangara was awarded with Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Antyodaya Krishi Puruskar–2016 for Zone-VIII for his contribution in the production of Lobster Fish adopting Sea Cage Fish Farming Technology on 25th September 2016. The award ceremony was jointly organized by ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Jodhpur & Agricultural University, Jodhpur. In addition to zonal award, six more innovative farmers have also been honored during the programme.
Dr. Balraj Singh, Vice Chancellor, Agriculture University, Jodhpur & Chief Guest of function has honoured Shri Masangara. Dr. Singh appreciated the remarkable success of the awarded farmer and stressed that recognition to the farmers will attract the more rural youth to become agri- entrepreneur.
Dr. S. K. Singh, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Jodhpur emphasized that the award and recognition to the innovative farmers, will motivate the farming community in future.
Dr. O.P. Yadav, Director, ICAR-CAZRI also expressed his views on this occasion.
Shri Hasam Bhai Jumabhai Masangara shared his sucess story and appealed the farmers to adopt this innovative technique at their farms to get more profit.
Approximately, 500 participants, including farmers, farm women and rural youth, scientist and other stakeholders attended the programme.

Zone II
Shri Deepak Kumar Singh of Banka, Bihar and Sri Ashok Kumar Sarkar of Nimbudera, North & Middle Andamans were awarded Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Antodaya Krishi Puraskar 2016 for Zone II on 25th September 2016 at Kolkata. This award ceremony was organized by ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute , Kolkata
The Jagjivan Ram Abhinav Kisan Puraskar 2015 was also conferred on Shri Jitendra Kumar Singh of Vaishali, Bihar.
Professor Swapan Kumar Datta, Vice- Chancellor, Bisva Bharati, Shantiniketan and forner DDG (Crop Science), ICAR and Chief Guest emphasized on the recent approval of GST (Goods & Services Tax) and its overall impact on agricultural marketing scenario of the country in future.
Dr. A. K. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Bihar Agricultural University, Bhagalpur congratulated the farmers of Eastern India for winning the awards. He suggested for the inclusion of climate resilient technologies in future while encouraging the farmers of West Bengal for awards.
Earlier, Dr. S. K. Roy, Director, ATARI, Kolkata delivered welcome address and briefed about the awards.
Vice-Chancellor of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, Nadia and Directors of ICAR Institutes graced the occasion.
A total of 300 farmers including farm women from different states of Eastern India were present in the event.

Zone-VII
Shri Balaram Patidar was awarded with Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Antyodaya Krishi Puruskar–2016 for Zone-VII on 25th September 2016 in a ceremony jointly organized by ICAR- Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Jabalpur and Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Gwalior at KVK Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh.
Shri Shantilal Bilwal, Member of the Legislative Assembly, Jhabua snd the chief guest of the ceremony appealed the farmers to adopt the scientific agriculture technology.
Prof. A.K.Singh, Vice Chancellor, RVSKVV, Gwalior, applauded the great achievements of Shri Balaram Patidarji by showing profitable farming in difficult situation of Jhabua Hills by application of recommended practices by the KVK scientists and other institutions.
Dr Anupam Mishra, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Jabalpur emphasized the significant contribution made by Shri Balaram Patidarji which has set a new milestone in the rainfed agricultue in Madhya Pradesh. He appriciated the innovative methods used by Patidarji not only in productions but also packging and marketing high value commercial crops like capsicum, tomato, banana, Papaya, strawberry, etc.
An agri-exhibition was also organized in this occasion.
More than 1078 participants including farmers and farm women and invited progressive farmers from Malwa attended the program.

Zone VI
Shri. Somnath Poudyal, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Government of Sikkim conferred Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Antyodaya Krishi Puruskar 2016 for Zone-VI to Smt. Anuradha Chettri, Progressive Orchid Grower from East Sikkim on 25th September 2016. The award ceremony was held at College of Agricultural Engineering and Post Harvest Technology, Central Agricultural University, Ranipool, Sikkim.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister applauded Smt. Anuradha Chettri and appreciated the efforts of ICAR-NRC for Orchids for transferring the technology to the farmers. He also emphasized to make agriculture as lucrative and attractive for the rural youths as livelihood.
Dr. D. R. Singh, Director, ICAR-NRC for Orchids briefed on various on-going activities of the institute. He also stressed upon protecting rich bio-diversity of Sikkim. He highlighted the need for promoting the cultivation of native orchids, particularly Dendrobium nobile as an alternative crop to Cymbidium that has long gestation period.
Nearly 250 farmers from Sikkim participated in the event.

Dr B.M.C. Reddy, Vice Chancellor, Dr YSR Horticultural University presented the award at a function organized by ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute , Zone X, Hyderabad at Dr.YSR Horticultural University, West Godavari on 25th September, 2016.
Dr.Y.G. Prasad, Director, ICAR-ATARI (Zone-X), Hyderabad informed that the award is conferred to recognize the contribution of small, marginal and landless farmers engaged in farming or farming related activities.
Shri Alluri Suryanarayana Murthy briefed about his IFS model to the farmers and urged to replicate it in similar farming situations across the state.
On this occasion, a farmer-scientist interaction meeting was also organized.
About 300 farmers from surrounding districts, scientists and senior officials from SAUs, ICAR Institutes, KVKs and State Government Departments participated in the event.
